“The team will play against Northern Ireland for him.” ~ Leo Beenhakker.
By now, i’m sure everybody has seen the dirty tackle Axel Witsel on Polish defender Marcin Wasilewski in a Belgian league match this past weekend which broke his leg. There is no room in the sport for such tackles and I’m very happy UEFA took a very heavy stance against Witsel. Witsel has been suspended by the Belgian football federation until late November and fined a heavy amount. Read the rest of this entry »
Rafal Boguski scored the quickest goal in Polish national team history in a 10-0 romp over San Marino, which also is the biggest victory in Polish history. Rafal ended the game with two goals. Ebi Smolarek scored 4 goals in the lopsided game. Robert Lewandowski, Ireneusz Jelen, Mariusz Lewandowski and Marek Saganowski also scored. The Polish team played a beautiful game right from the start. Took a 4-0 into half-time and they never looked back.
Even after a disgusting dinner, a good afternoon snack can make you feel better. At least in theory… Match in Belfast was particularly hideous meal. Can anything improve our aftertaste now? Frankly, I doubt. Since the Slovakia game I was waiting for a NI match to regain faith in our team. To become convinced we have not forgotten how to play soccer. As you can imagine, I am not convinced. Is there a possibility that a game against San Marino will convince me? Not at all. It can only make me feel worse if things go bad.
Northern Ireland and Poland are meeting in Belfast, Northern Ireland on Saturday with first place on the line. And, more importantly, the loser will probably see it’s 2010 World Cup hopes go down the drain. But, that’s not the only thing on the line in Belfast, Leo Beenhakker’s future as manager of the national team is also up in the air.
If you have not seen Jelen’s goal against Le Mans, you should do so. The video is below. What you’ll see (if you’ll share my point of view of course) is nice technique, flair and composure (and a nice assist by Dariusz Dudka too!). Some of you might remember Irek’s performances at World Cup 2006 in Germany. He was, next to Boruc, our only player who represented Poland proudly enough to deserve call ups in future. Instead, he was somewhat forgotten and pushed to sit in the shade. Undeservedly in my humble opinion.
