Fight to the finish

Lot’s has happened since my last blog entry on the Soca Soul! And for that, I do apologize. I’ve just been very busy with other commitments and have not had the time to watch too many games, so reporting on them wouldn’t be fair for the readers and I just failed to find time to make posts. Hopefully that’s all over now and beyond me, and I can continue to do what is really fun for me, and that’s talking Polish football!

Wisla Krakow will be just fine without Brozek

The show must go on. As Wisla Krakow prepare for this Sunday’s Krakow derby against Cracovia Krakow, they are doing it without star player Pawel Brozek who injured himself last weekend against GKS Belchatow and could miss the remainder of the season. Many have already written Wisla off the title chase, however, I don’t see it that way. I think Wisla Krakow is still a strong team. Sure, they will have more troubles scoring, but everyone will change the way they play. From coaching, to the defense to the forwards, everyone will play a bit different to adjust to missing Brozek from the squad.

Ekstraklasa Round 20 wrap-up

This week can be described easily by just one word: Upsets. The upsets started Friday, with Polonia Warsaw and Legia Warsaw both losing. Polonia lost 3-1 to LKS Lodz, while Legia lost 2-1 to Jagiellonia. Upsets continued on Saturday, as Wisla Krakow tried to get a win and jump over both Warsaw clubs into second place, but was unable to score at GKS Belchatow and tied 0-0 in a game where Wisla star Pawel Brozek left on a stretcher after colliding with Belchatow’s goalkeeper Lukasz Sapela. The upsets didn’t stop there, on Sunday, Gornik Zabrze shocked Lech Poznan and tied the first place team 1-1. Lech tried to get a very solid lead on the standings but couldn’t score on the last place Zabrze side until the 92nd minute, when a own-goal by Pawel Strak cost the home side a full-3 points.

Ekstraklasa Round 19 wrap-up

Ekstraklasa got to a real crazy start to Round 19 on Friday with LKS Lodz holding on to a 4-3 victory over Cracovia Krakow. The game featured the most goals of any match this season, and also featured some late second heroics as LKS Lodz was down by two in their home stadium with only a minute to go. LKS Lodz needed a miracle. And they got it. First, Rafal Kujawa scored in the 89th minute, and then Wahan Geworgian scored give Lodz the all important 3 points. National team hopefuls Maciej Iwanski, Robert Lewandowski , Roger, and Pawel Brozek all scored for their clubs this weekend as well. Here’s the rest from around the Ekstraklasa in Round 19-

Ekstraklasa Round 18 Review

Round 18 is officially over, and the Polish Ekstraklasa is under way. The weekend featured two big derbies in Polish football, a 0-0 match between Polonia Warsaw and Legia Warsaw, and a 1-0 victory for Gornik Zabrze over Ruch Chorzow. A confident Lech Poznan team, over came a heart breaking end to their UEFA Cup run last Thursday after a 2-1 loss to Udinese, with a 3-2 victory over GKS Belchatow on Sunday. Poznan now sit in first place, 2-points clear of their closest competitor, Legia Warsaw. Here’s some of the best, and worst, from around the Ekstraklasa from the weekend.
